Achieving Your Goals In 2017

With the Holiday festivities now over and the New Year upon us, we may set goals such as “Exploring a new path” or “Getting into a healthier routine.”

However, the idea of goal setting can sometimes be overwhelming or seem impossible. Perhaps there have been too many years where high goals were never achieved. Then some doubtful thoughts can come along, much like “What’s the use? I fall out of the routine before I can really get into it, etc…”

Here are some tips to not lose that ambition and drive that you have for your goals:

  1. Set goals that are within reach. Setting smaller goals for that ultimate goal can be key to success. The smaller more short-term goal gets you a step closer to that ultimate goal.
  2. Remember your reason for setting the goal in the first place. Here are some ideas on how to keep focused:
    • Remind yourself why this specific goal was set in the first place
    • Take time on a regular basis, maybe weekly, to visualize or focus on the goal and the reasons connected to it. This can take just 5-10 minutes and can make all the difference in moving towards your goal. Quoting Part 3 of Horton’s article, Create a Plan For Success:
    • Practically all experts advise:
      • Allow the mind to wander to identify the desired goal.
      • Envision the benefits of achieving the goal in full detail.
    • With decisions that are connected to the goal, ask yourself before making any final decisions, “Will this get me closer or farther from my goal?”, “Will this help me or make things more challenging?”
  3. Do your best to surround yourself with positive and supportive influences and people. If necessary, search for and select a good support system. For example, if you decided to get in better shape, go online and try myfitnesspal.com. It’s free and you have a large online community of support for reaching your fitness goals.
  4. Be inspired by good examples of accomplishing something that few people would think is possible. For example, see this amazing story of how a girl overcame an immovable obstacle in her life.

We hope your New Year will bring you happiness and success.
